Item Description

You will receive a private tour of Harkness Tower and the Carillon.  A member of the Guild of Carillonneurs will take you to the practice level (where you may be able to try the practice carillon!) as well as the playing cabin where you can observe a Guild member playing a song (perhaps even a song of your choice!).

This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is a rare treat as only the Guild members have access to all levels of Harkness tower.  Not only will you get an inside view of Yale's historical Harkness tower, but you will also get phenomenal views of Yale and New Haven.

Quick Facts

  • Harkness Tower: 216 feet, 284 steps to the roof
  • The Carillon: 54 bells, pitched in B
  • Total Weight: 43 tons
  • Age of Bells: 10 bells were cast in 1921, the remainder in 1964
  • Each bell is inscribed with 'For God, For Country, and for Yale'
  • The Guild: Founded in 1949 by Elliot H. Kone BR '49, renamed in 1964; 26 members maximum

Special Instructions

Please bid as an individual or pair.  The tour can be given for up to two people.

The Guild plays every day at 12:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.  The tour can be arranged at a mutually convenient time.

From April 28 to May 12, the Guild cannot play due to reading week and finals.  However, the Guild can certainly give a tour of the tower.  After May 12, the carillon's summer schedule begins, which is for an hour a day between 5 to 8 p.m.
