Item Description
Get away from it all - without leaving Rhode Island!
High on a hill overlooking both harbors, the newly restored Hygeia House has ten rooms, each with a private bath and water view. On the water and just steps from the beach, the Hygeia House offers tranquility in a fabulous location. Many guests are content to just grab a rocking chair on one of the porches and watch island life pass by. Continental breakfast is served daily.
Built in 1883, the Hygeia House served as both the homestead and pratice of Dr. John C. Champlin, one of the island's most successful hoteliers and also the island's only physician. Nearly condemned by the town after years of passive neglect and abandonment, the building was purchased and fully restored in 1999 by Champlin Starr, the great grandson of Dr. Champlin, and his wife Lisa. The Starrs and their two young children are the innkeepers. While the building has been"modernized," it continues to honor the past and has become something of a museum honoring the generations of Champlins.
