This very classic wine develops a silky finish of complex structure. Its beautiful intense crimson color unveils a fruity bouquet with hints of vanilla. The gravel soil in the very heart of the appellation is ideal for vines. The grape varieties are represented by 72 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 8% Cabernet franc. The family Barton maintains the traditional methods of winemaking, producing a typical Saint-Julien of elegance and distinction.
Chateau Léoville Barton was born in 1826, after the division of the Léoville estate, which belonged to Alexandre Gasq from 18th century. In 1826, an Irish, Hugh Barton, already proprietor of Château Langoa, purchased one quarter of the Léoville estate. The main part belonged to Jean de Las Cases. This part became known as Léoville-Barton. The Château stayed the property of the Barton family. Six generations of Bartons have since followed, and continued to preserve the quality of the wine, classified as a deuxièmes crus (2nd growth) vineyard in 1855 under the Bordeaux Classification system.
Today, the reputation of the wine grows daily thanks to its quality obtained by traditional methods of winemaking. The fruit is harvested by hand, the berries are destemmed before fermentation in a fascinating mix of wooden vats which lie in the main cellar, renovated in 1977. The fermenting must is pumped over to submerge the cap and there is a maceration of between two and three weeks. When finished the wine goes into oak, between 50% and 100% new for the grand vin, Chateau Léoville-Las-Cases, depending on the vintage, something in the order of 25% for the second wine Clos de Marquis, and heads off to the barrel cellars which are to the south of the main chai where it rests for up to 20 months. The wines are fined before bottling. Château Leoville Barton is a typical Saint-Julien and one of the most elegant Médoc wines.
