Item Description
This handmade tapestry depicts an African market scene. It was created by political refugee Mpati Gocini of the Xhosa tribe, purchased personally by Interlock Board member Michael Marzolla during his travels in Lesotho in 1980. The Xhosa are an indigenous people who currently make up approximately 18% of the South African population. The Xhosa are among the poorest South Africans, and the community to which recently deceased Grammy Award winning artist and activist Miriam Makeba belongs.
