Item Description
Patricia Polacco's work is known for being inspired by her grandmother's Russian heritage. These four hardcover books -- all signed and dated 2008 -- are perfect examples of her wonderful story telling and beautiful artwork.
Many of the stories and rhymes in Babushka's Mother Goose, come from the stories Polacco remembers her grandmother (Babushka) telling. The 24 stories in the book include:Diadushka Planted a Trunip, Klootchka Plootchka, Misha's Goat, Matroishka, Svetlana's Pancakes, The Train to Ivanovo and the Golden Child.
Thunder Cake is the story of how Polacco conquered her childhood fear of thunderstorms with the assistance her grandmother. By encouraging the young Palacco to ignore the approaching storm, the two wander outside to gather the ingredients for Thunder Cake, the perfect recipe for a rainy day. After the cake is in the oven, she and grandma talk and in the end Polacco welcomes the storm and a warm slice of Thunder Cake, never again to fear the "voice of thunder."
Luba and the Wren is Polacco's adaptation of the old Russian folk tale The Fisherman and the Flounder. After Luba frees the wren, the bird surprises her and tells her she could have any wishes that she could imagine. Luba is happy and wants nothing, but when she tells her parents the story, they beg her to ask the wren for a bigger house and better land. It isn't enough, and her parents ask for more. Polacco says "this story, again, comes from a concern that I have today for our precious children, children that are left i the wake of their own parents ambition."
Babushka is the main character again in Rechenka's Eggs. She is known for the beautiful eggs she makes for the Easter festival in Moskva. Babushka rescues an injured goose She names the goose Rechenka. When the goose is feeling better, she accidentally breaks all of Babushka's eggs, and the old woman decides not to go to the festival. The next morning Rechenka lays the most beautiful egg. However, the coming of the spring festival also means it's time to let Rechenka go.
