ARTIST STATEMENT
Throughout my childhood, my mother would stucco all the ceilings and walls in our houses. Fully captivated, I would sit for hours while she used a mayonnaise jar lid to decorate every exposed surface.I was always impressed by my mothers spontaneity and creative use of plaster, but equally indelible, was her continued inaction that forced me into foster-care at age 14. This experience created a space of resistance and flux. It also has served as a dwelling place for my tenacity and desire to find surfaces to decorate and paint. For me, this unusual space has ultimately become just as sacred as some of the most famous cathedrals around the globe.

A cathedral is a container for spiritual expressions that symbolize a part of history that people visit weekly or even daily, to observe, reflect and pray. The impulse to create pinches my delicate pale skin and outlines a conviction to accept the inclination to create expressions that can become a catalyst for change, as I play with texture and color. My canvases commemorate the memories that bind me to the past, present and future.

I couldn’t investigate these expressions without acknowledging the layers of my life that are shaped my relationships with God, family and friends. This process pushes me to sit for hours and paint the walls of a cathedral that has never been seen before. Therefore, I invite you to observe, reflect and pray.
