Item Description
Open since 1946, Angelo’s in Glassboro, New Jersey, is tiny – just 8 booths plus counter space. Justly famous for its ultra-cheap breakfast—two eggs, hash browns, and coffee for just $1.95 – it is almost as well-known for its fresh-made lemonade. Populated by colorful locals and a loyal, long-serving counter staff, it provides the classic diner experience in a classic diner setting. John Baeder, the ultimate diner connoisseur, has captured its unique characteristics in inimitable fashion with precision and warm affection in his 2006 painting. As he noted recently: I liked "Angelo's" because of the way it was nestled by the house. The awnings gave off a graphic dance. I don't usually spend too much time photographing a diner. I like to get in and get out. But the place was bustling with traffic when I visited. (It must have been liver and onion day.) As I was photographing the exterior of the diner, a maroon Cadillac Coupe DeVille was driving out, and I began to click away. (I like Cadillacs.) As it pulled out, in drove this blue Chevette. Then, the yellow Cadillac pulled in. Perfecto! Primary color action. I had looked at the slides I shot of Angelo’s for years, thinking the diner was too diminutive to paint. I often look at images for a long time, and set them aside. It is sometimes years later when, suddenly, the image screams: "paint me!" Angelo’s did.
Baeder has single-handedly developed the diner image into an American icon and has captured, lovingly, images of hundreds of diners across the United States. This is among his very best.
