The Youth Service Providers Network, a program of Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston in partnership with the Boston Police Department, reaches out to youth and families that are in desperate need of services. Since its inception in 1996, YSPN has provided services to more than 8,000 youth and young adults. YSPN was created as a solution to the growing frustration of Boston Police Department officers, whose only available option in dealing with at-risk youth was arrest. Boston police decided that many of the youth they came in contact with would benefit more from guidance and assistance than from an encounter with the Juvenile Justice system. Driven by BGCB's mission of helping youth become responsible citizens and leaders, YSPN provides police officers with options and resources for many youth offenders or potential offenders. For twelve years, YSPN social workers have connected Boston's highest risk youth to a safety net of services and support. Stationed in policed departments across the city, these social workers receive referrals from police officers and youth organizations and make commitments to work with individual youth and their entire families, introducing them to much needed resources, steering them away from destructive behaviors, and enabling them to focus their lives on productive futures. At YSPN, they believe that providing supportive, caring adults to at-risk youth and families gives us the best chance to curb the cycle of violence in Boston.
