The world's coral reefs are precious tapestries of interdependent life forms. Their fragile existence is emblematic of the mysterious beauty that occurs in nature and its increasingly precarious future. Today the plight of coral reef ecosystems is a global concern, with climate change, pollution, and over-fishing as the leading causes of their decline. Your tax-deductible purchase will help provide funds for peer-reviewed science and preservation projects at threatened locations and will also leverage corporate sponsorship for Reef Fest, forged to generate sustained conservation dollars presenting festivals that will inform and inspire, while featuring internationally recognized musical artists who share a concern for our planet’s environmental fate.

The REEF FEST Story:

Fed up with the rapid decline of coral reefs and inspired to make a difference, NOAA (National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration) scientist and watchman of the seas, Dr. Jim Hendee, has joined forces with Grammy award-winning music producer and engineer Richard Serotta, to create REEF FEST, which will serve as a worldwide series of music and environmental festivals and is specifically designed to inspire community awareness and educate citizens about global environmental effects on coral reef ecosystems.

"Research shows that at least ten percent of coral reefs are now beyond recovery, thirty percent are in critical condition and may die within only ten to twenty years,” says Dr. Hendee.  “If we don't turn things around in a hurry, estimates indicate that up to sixty percent of the world's coral reefs may be completely wasted by 2050."

“The most universal lesson of my career is that the core strength of music lies in its ability to communicate a transcendent message,” says Richard Serotta.  “The world's sublime reefs and ecosystems are the ‘canary in the coal mine’ for our planet’s environment, and when this issue is put before musicians and artists, as well as the general community, they are more than willing to lend their support.”

"Coral reefs are more than just another pretty face, like Nemo or the Little Mermaid,” Dr. Hendee continues.  “They provide shoreline protection against tsunamis, typhoons and hurricanes for millions of people around the world; billions of dollars in direct income through fishing, diving, boating, aquaculture and aquarium industries; and represent a new frontier in the discovery of biomedical products for cancer and other research.  Not to mention they're just plain gorgeous to look at and experience."
