The 2010 Annual Benefit Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at The Palace Hotel, San Francisco, CA
On Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 5 PM the Glaucoma Research Foundation will 32 years of innovation at the 2010 Annual Benefit in the historic Palace Hotel in San Francisco.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is our Honorary California Chairman, and Mayor Gavin Newsome is our Honorary San Francisco Chairman. The event Co-Chairs are Nobuko Saito Cleary and Gary Cleary, PharmD, PhD with Deirdre Porter and Bradford as the Co-Chairs for the Research Overview.
The theme for this year is "Celebrating the Scientists", and builds on our traditional event title "Speeding the Cure. Spreading the Word". Highlights will include the presentation of the Catalyst Award to Jeffrey B. Kindler, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Pfizer Inc. Additional highlights include the ever popular Research update from the principal investigators of the Catalyst For a Cure (CFC) research consortium, and the presentation of The Shaffer Prize for Innovative Research, selected by the Glaucoma Research Foundation Science Advisory Committee and announced the night of the event.
Other awards to be presented are The President's Award, acknowledging exemplary volunteer leadership. This year's recipient is Andi Mallinckrodt, who with her business partner Kris Forbes has designed beautiful décor and floral arrangements for all of our major events. Andi serves on Glaucoma Research Foundation's Silicon Valley Leadership Council, an all volunteer group, dedicated to raising awareness and funds in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. The Visionary Award is presented each year to a seasoned leader who "had the vision to see a world free of glaucoma, and the commitment to make that vision a personal priority." The Award is traditionally presented in the fall prior to the event, with the award recipient acknowledged again at the event. The 2009 recipient was announced as Dennis E. Singleton, who has served on the Board of Directors for eleven years and as the Chair from 2003 to 2006. His dedication to the organization is reflected in his committee work, and charitable leadership.

Glaucoma is the leading preventable cause of blindness in the United States. Everyone is vulnerable, from adults to infants. Undetected and untreated, glaucoma can lead to irretrievable vision loss; even blindness. Those at highest risk are African-Americans, where this silent thief of sight strikes at an earlier age and progresses more quickly, Hispanic-Latinos, Asians, everyone over 60, and anyone with a family history of glaucoma.
This mission is fulfilled with programs in research and education. Our website, http://www.glaucoma.org/, is a national model of internet accessibility for the vision impaired. We also provide a toll-free 800 number staffed during office hours with a real person ready with real information for your questions.
GRF relies almost entirely on contributions from individuals across the country to fund its programs. We receive no government funds, and very little from foundations. How do we invest those contributions? 85 cents of every dollar raised goes to support programs. This prudent use of funds has earned GRF the highest awards from two of the nations toughest monitors of charity operations: Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau's Wise Giving Alliance.
