Learn More about the 2009 Corcoran Print Portfolio: Oil and Water
The Corcoran Portfolio, inaugurated in 1986 by the Printmaking Department of the Corcoran College of Art and Design, was conceived as a collaborative process for students and faculty; to offer a challenge to emerging young artists and provide a professional creative experience.
Each portfolio is organized around a theme or unifying idea as expressed in the title. In the early fall semester, students as well as faculty from outside the Printmaking Department are invited to participate in planning and creating the portfolio. Together the group decides on the theme for the prints with creative interpretation the order of the day.
All media taught in the departments – etching, dry point, lithography, linocut, handmade paper, silk-screen, laser printer and computer prints have been represented in the portfolios.
Of the more than 265 artists who have taken part, more than 35 have been faculty members. In keeping with this tradition, the 23rd portfolio includes 31 prints by faculty members and students.
In 2007, the Arthritis Foundation introduced pieces from the Corcoran Archives including works from the 2005 exhibition. This year, we are pleased to select works of art from the Corcoran Print Portfolio 2009: Oil and Water.
