2009 AIS Spring Benefit - Real World Experiences Online Auction
Did You Know?
The results of our career interest survey last fall suggest that 20% of AIS students are interested in medicine, another 20% in business, 10% each in law and the arts. Another 15% are interested in science and engineering, and another 15% in government and journalism.
Ready for the Real World?
The Spring Benefit Committee has created a new type of item this year which we are calling "Real World Experiences." Taking our cues from a career interest survey conducted last fall among AIS upper school students, we sought out professionals willing to donate a few hours of their time to allow students to shadow them and learn about their profession.
Career shadowing allows a student to see for him or herself the challenges, opportunities and achievements of a typical day in the life of a professional. It is moral education in the best sense, because it brings out qualities of human character in action.
Our catalog includes a wide range of professions, from pastry chef to orthopedic surgeon. There are celebrities, authors and cutting-edge research scientists in our mix.
The item numbers reflect the major category we consider the experience to represent. For example, Journalism 1 is an opportunity to observe Clark Howard taping his show, Arts 4 is an opportunity to learn about the art as well as the business of oriental rugs, Government 2 is an opportunity to shadow the Mayor of Norcross who also happens to be a musician.
We invite you to browse through our list and consider the broad educational value these experiences offer our students. The "Real World" of professionals has been created by human activity, and before we know it, our students will be full participants in this activity.
Note: Permission will be granted for students to attend their “Real World Experience” during school hours, once certain conditions are met.

Think of all the young people you know who might benefit from a career shadowing day. Perhaps you have a niece or a nephew who would like to be a physician some day. Or a godchild who has always wanted to be a TV reporter. This is a chance for them to develop insight through firsthand experience of the daily activities of people in their chosen field.
